Fleeing February NJ cold – Part 1a

Written by Kim

So I didn’t stick to my original plan of 4 posts in my series so…1a today. Plans are sometimes made to be broken. We started our adventure with a few days at Borgata in AC. Although the casino always has the edge we came out a little ahead because we had 3 big hits (2 straight flushes for $250 each and a Royal flush for $750) playing pai gow poker that fueled our few days. We enjoy pai gow because you can play a long time due to all the pushes and the $5 bonus if you hit like we did gives a nice payout. Alex golfed for a few days but didn’t golf so well so was frustrated. It rained pretty hard when Alex golfed so we had to have a little laundromat in our room to dry stuff out before getting in car to drive. Lol. I was lazy just going to the gym to walk or pool to relax while he golfed. We were lucky to meet Tony and Patty for dinner our first night and Dee and John our 2nd night. Such a treat to see friends we don’t see often. Things I learned with a midweek trip to the casino: I am the youngest one in the gym (unlike the weekends with all the meat heads I’m the oldest, fattest and slowest), you can get on most any table or slot machine you want anytime, and it’s a lot less crowded.

Dee and John also joined for dinner on our second night

We got on the road for the first leg of our drive around 8 am after a great breakfast at one of our favorite places, JJ’s Diner in Pleasantville. We had a quick stop for gas and something to eat between DC and Fredericksburg somewhere in Virginia. Needed another rest stop in Roanoke Rapids, NC which was meant to be since there was a DQ so I could treat my Valentine to a Blizzard – yum!

Happy Valentine’s Day my love!

We stopped in Rocky Mount, NC after about 7 hours of driving to have some fun and rest for the night. We found a cool place, Rocky Mount Mills, with a bunch of craft breweries to enjoy Valentines night. We started the night at Koi Pond Breweries where we had a few beers. They had a good Belgian that I had, a gingerbread stout for Alex then we both tried the Amber. We mosied on to TBC West for a few more beers and some food which was good. Lastly, we stopped at BDD Brewery and chatted with a girl who moved to NC from Tahoe. The girl at BDD told us you can rent tiny houses within walking distance of the breweries called River & Twine. I can see a future trip to Rocky Mount to check that out. Before calling it a night we stopped at the Mexican place right by our hotel, El Tapatio, for a margarita night cap. Alex was feeling very grateful so called the manager over and told her we were giving a big tip so everyone working could get a tip for Valentines Day. The staff was very happy the 2 drunk ones from NJ stopped in right before closing. Life is short pay it forward where you can.
