Leg 2 – Raritan Canal Towpath Trail

Written by Kim

Today we walked 3.5 miles from Demott Lane to South Bound Brook. Part of this trail was familiar to us because South Bound Brook is just a few miles from our house so we often park there to walk the trail. This stretch is not as peaceful because it’s fairly close to Easton Avenue which is a busy road and runs under Route 287

Trail going 7nder 287

We saw similar wildlife today and a few more pedestrians and bikers than we saw yesterday. It was 60 degrees and a beautiful day so many were taking advantage of the nice day. The trail is likely getting more use than a normal Thursday PM

Some turtles sunning on the canal bank
Geese chasing the turtle off the stump
Ripples in the river

We figured out that the trail has been changed over the years we assume because of Route 18 construction so the mile markers don’t really make sense. We saw 2 sets of locks and a swing bridge that enabled barges to be towed down the canal.

The old mile marker
South Bound Brook locks
Old Swing bridge also in South Bound Brook that doesn’t rotate anymore
South Bound Brook
Queens Bridge near the end of this segment

We hope you’ll continue to follow our journey. We’ve only done about 6 miles of the 38 so much more to come. Stay safe…..until next time.
