Sept 13 – Valley of Fire and other shenanigans

Written by Kim

We spent the morning exploring the Valley of Fire state park. Thanks Jamie for the recommendation! What an awesome place. It is the first state park in Nevada about a 1 hour drive from Vegas. The landscape and views were fantastic. We remarked how we couldn’t believe this was in the US. It is a 42,000 acre park with scenic drives through the canyons, hiking trails, picnic areas and camping. We didn’t do much hiking because it was really hot and we weren’t prepared. We planned to grab a quick breakfast at Mc Donald’s on the way but there but there was really no where to get anything once we left the city. Fail! We grabbed a snack at the visitors center once it opened. We will definitely come back in cooler weather to get some hiking in. We saw some wildlife – a big horned sheep, a roadrunner and a few other birds. We didn’t get a glimpse of any coyote or fox (but did get a photo from the visitors center). I highly recommend the drive out to Valley of Fire if you’re ever in Vegas. The pictures can’t capture the vastness but give you and idea. Just breathtaking!

We enjoyed lunch at Hash House a go go for some more farm twisted creations. We are a bit addicted to this place. I had a meatloaf sandwich and Alex had a burger. We spent the afternoon relaxing at the pool – this time no fancy cabana just a lounge chair and it was just as enjoyable. I love getting a bit of sun. The design of the hotel could have been different though. The pool gets shady as the day goes on and the sun falls behind the hotel tower creating a shadow. Oh well I didn’t design it!

My meatloaf sandwich with roasted tomatoes and mozzarella on Amish white bread toast. Yum!

After the pool I needed a little siesta and Alex took a walk down to Fremont to see Brian do Slotzilla, the zip line over Fremont. Looks like fun but I wouldn’t be doing that anytime soon!

We went down to Golden Nugget for dinner. We thought we’d go back to Cadillac, the Mexican place, but the line was too long so we ended up in Claim Jumper. We had to wait a bit so played some slots and Alex hit big again! His luck has been fantastic before meals with big hits before dinner a few nights ago, breakfast yesterday and now dinner tonight. We’ll take it! We both had chicken pot pie for dinner. It was delicious but huge. We could have ordered just one

After dinner we played some pai gow at the Golden Nugget and had a little excitement. There was a drunk/high guy at the table next to us. The pit boss told him he couldn’t play and he escalated into a fight with another guy at the table. They were fighting on the floor right next to us. I quickly got up and ran through the pit to the other side before they knocked my chair over. Security came and it took about 6 guards to get this guy under control as he resisted. I was quite shaken but not hurt. It upsets me to see people under the influence get out of control. You never know if they have a gun or knife and you will be an innocent bystander caught in the mess. Anyhow, we did pretty well at pai gow so went back to our hotel. When we to our room there was a woman out in the hall begging for money. Not what I needed after the fight. I called security and they came up but she was gone. Ugh. Now to sleep! Ok Vegas I’m ready to go home. I like Vegas but can only take about 3-4 days. This was a bit longer and I’m ready to go home tomorrow. I’m tired of wearing my mask everywhere and may just sit in the house to recover. Only kidding. 😂 Feels a little odd to be going home to our new house. It was a great trip and we are going home with quite a bit more money than we came with so that’s definitely a win.

Traveling tomorrow most of the day so will recap our flights in my next post. Until then…..
