Sept 2021 – A rainy drive to San Diego

Written by Kim

Monday morning we set off for the 2 hour drive from Palm Springs to San Diego. It was a cloudy rainy drive. Who says it never rains in Southern California? It’s rained twice in less than a week since we’re here.

We decided to do the hop on hop off trolley when we arrived in San Diego. We like these types of tours when we’re in a new city so we can get the lay of the land and decide where we want to explore more. We had lunch in the gas lamp district at Werewolf. Excellent burgers were our big meal of the day. The bonus was the side of Brussels sprouts instead of fries for me. (no food pictures I forgot)

After our tour we checked into our hotel, Best Western, right downtown on the edge of Little Italy. It’s a basic hotel, very clean and in a good location. After a short nap, we walked up India Street to check out a few breweries. First we tried Ballast Point. The beer was good and our snack / dinner of truffle infused Buffalo cauliflower was delicious. On our walk back toward the hotel we tried Bolt Brewery. Beer wasn’t as good here so we had one and moved on. As we walked further I had to use the restroom so we stopped for a few vodka & bourbon nightcaps at a pub. It was a fun night.

Tuesday morning breakfast was at Morning Glory (what’s your story?). It was a unique little place with an interesting menu. Alex had bucatini with eggs, pork belly and some cheesy creamy sauce. I had chicken and waffles.

After our hearty breakfast we were ready to get some steps in so we drove over to Balboa Park. Balboa Park is historic urban cultural park with gardens, open spaces, museums and the zoo. We will do the zoo tomorrow but wanted to check out some museums today.

We started getting a little culture in the Museum of Art. It was 3 floors of paintings, sculptures and other art from all around the world with some pieces dating back to early 1600s.

The second museum we visited was the Fleet Science center. It was similar to the Liberty Science Center in NJ with lots of interactive exhibits for kids. I think we were the oldest people in there without any kids. Lol. Alex loved this one.

The third museum we enjoyed was the Natural History museum. We saw lots of stuffed animals (not the toy kind), dinosaur bones, snakes in jars (we know our friend Larry would have loved them).

The last museum we visited was the Air & Space museum. This was the smallest museum but had lots of different aircraft as well as a great space exhibit. Overall our visit was great. Lots of walking and gaining some new knowledge. It was a fun day.

We have dinner planned in Little Italy tonight followed by trivia at the brewery. Tomorrow we’re headed to the zoo so stay posted.

Until then….
