January 2025 – Puerto Limon, Costa Rica on Explorer

Written by Kim

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

We took a small group tour with Lucky Tours today that was organized by Bev, a Canadian woman we met on Facebook. It was only 6 of us in a van driven by Robert. The tour was good and took us to a few stops. Our first stop was the obligatory extra stop at the banana plantation. This is common for Caribbean tour where the driver must get a commission to take you to a stop with souvenirs and usually chocolate or coffee to buy. Luckily it wasn’t a high pressure sell. We walked through a small banana plantation.

Our second stop was Coahuila National Park. We arrived in light rain. When you arrive you must sign a book and are asked to give a donation. We gave $5 each to walk through the rainforest.

Part of the trail was boardwalks but most was a bit of a muddy mess with big puddles due to the rain,

Robert our guide led the way
I was trying to be happy but I was soaked and my new white sneakers are a muddy mess!

We saw some sloths and monkeys along the way but I think man6 animals were hunkered down as the rain got harder.

Howler monkey
A sloth in the tree

The rainforest was right along the side of the beach

Drenched
And just gorgeous

Our last stop was a ride in the canal. Our boat driver, , was very good at spotting wildlife (and it stopped raining for the most part only 1 shower).

Very tropical
Some egrets
Hard to see but there’s a sloth on the center right
A lizard
Monkeys playing
A monkey
Another sloth

The canal was busy with tourist boats and some local fishermen.

The water was brackish, a mix of fresh and salt water

I don’t think we saw the prettiest part of Costa Rica on the Atlantic Ocean side

Our ship on left – Holland America – Zuiderman and Serenade of the Seas

As we were preparing to leave they called 4 names who weren’t onboard but we saw a last minute runner so we suspect that 3 passengers missed the ship. Shortly after we left we turned around to go back to port for a medical emergency,. Someone on FB said they allowed the 3 passengers who missed the ship to board when they took the passenger with medical emergency off, Phew!

We walked a bit downtown but I told Alex I didn’t feel safe so we went back to the ship
It was quite a long walk in the port which was not very built up just a small shopping market in what looks like a cargo port

We had dinner at Giovanni’s. We were very disappointed with the service. The server actually scolded me for asking for plates for our meat and cheese board and told me to just wait a second. Good thing i didn’t want a second glass of wine because I never could ask. My chicken was nice and hot but very dry. It was one of the worst specialty restaurant experiences. Our service is in the MDR is ten times better. Come on Royal we’re paying extra for this.

Our meat & cheese board
My caprese salad was very good
My chicken piccata with very little
Alex’s Branzino

The show tonight was a Holland juggler. He was very good – he has several Guinness World Records. Alex enjoyed part of the show then a nice after dinner nap.

Juggling cigar boxes like WC Fields
7 rings

Tomorrow’s port is Panama, Until then…..
