We started my birthday on Thursday with a delicious breakfast at Blue Heaven.

Blue Heaven is a cute outdoor restaurant tucked in a backyard setting which is pretty typical for Key West.

We enjoyed a few delicious omelets with the chickens begging a bit like Boomer.

I think I shared the story of the chickens in Key West on a previous visit but here goes. The chickens are a carryover from Cuban cock fights which were legal until 1986. When the fights became illegal the city decided to start a program feeding the chickens. Now it is illegal to feed them.

We spent the afternoons lounging in our pool. We really like these cottages. The zen gardens and pool are so relaxing.

We had lots of friends by the pool.

Just a walk around the block got us to Sloppy Joe’s and Irish Kevin on Duval Street. We really enjoy the antics of Irish Kevin. I was invited up to stage 2 days in a row for shots. No one says no when invited by Kevin. He is a good entertainer getting everyone involved in the party. He stops while playing to ask everyone who enters where they are from then everyone yells No Shit. It’s hysterical.

We really enjoyed happy hour at the Boathouse. The bartenders were excellent and you can’t beat the half price small plates & drinks. You can tell a place is good when it’s filled with locals and you find all the marina staff in here

A trip to Key West isn’t complete without watching sunset at Mallory Square.

Now we sit in the airport awaiting our flight home. We already see some delay and we have a very short connection in Charlotte so here’s hoping for the best. We already looked at contingencies which are slim – we’re on the last flight out of Charlotte to Myrtle so if we miss our connection no other flights and no rental cars are available so might be an interesting night. We will see….until then.
