Nov 2025 – A day in Mallacoota

Written by Kim

Disaster Bay

Our drive from Merimbula to Mallacoota was only a bit over an hour so we decided to take a small detour and visit. Green Cape Lighthouse. We drove the Steaksauce Highway (aka A1 again) to head south to Mallacoota. It was lots of forest and pastures with cows.

Prince Highway / A1

The turnoff to Green Cape Lighthouse was only 20 km but added over an hour to our trip. Once we arrived on the long dirt road we understood why. Our little MG3 did pretty good off roading. It was definitely worth the detour.

Our first stop was Disaster Bay lookout where we paid the $8 AUD park fee by putting our coins in the envelope in the box. What a breathtaking view.

We continued another 13 km to get to the lighthouse.

We made it

The surf & rocky coast around the point where the lighthouse was located made it easy to understand why so many ships wrecked here and the bay around the other side is called Disaster Bay.

Wow
Each crash was exhilarating
Not a tall lighthouse because it was high on the cliff
Alex got some great shots
Another pretty view
Yes we’re in Australia

After our lighthouse adventure we drove another hour to get to Mallacoota which is a very small lakeside village.

Main Street
Our lunch, sandwich for Alex, chicken & mushroom pie for me

Our Airbnb is very unique tonight. It sits a bit in the woods about a block from the lake. Our host, Arlene, greeted us and told us about the wildlife we might see. This area has lots of Roos and koalas running around. She said she sometimes gets koalas right in the tree by our room,

Bedroom
Living / dining room
Kitchen
Crazy bathroom – wasn’t too bad to get in and out of shower

After settling in we took a walk by the lake. It’s so serene and beautiful.

There’s a nice walking path around the lake

We drove out to Bastion Point too

Bastion Point
Check out that narrow boat launch by the jetty

We had dinner at Lucy’s noodle house. We met a few older ladies yesterday at breakfast in Merimbula and they told us to try it. Arlene, our host, also recommended it telling us that Lucy is the richest person in Mallacoota. It was hopping in there

Lucy’s is on the other side of Main Street
Rice noodles with pork & dumplings
Chicken with veggies and cashews

We saw lots of koala signs so we were on the lookout and found on walking on a fence in the neighborhood

Koala climbing the fence
In Florida you see iguanas doing this in Australia it’s koalas

Tomorrow we will head to Phillips Island. It’s a longer drive 6-7 hours so we will be out earl6.

Until then….
