Formy’s Irish Open & visiting our winter friends

Our final stop on our January adventure is always Palm Beach Gardens to join Alex’s Golf Club of NJ friends for the Formy Irish Open. The tournament runs from Thursday to Sunday with a practice round on Wednesday. I joined the practice round since it’s at a very casual and fun course, Palm Beach National or “The Nash” as they call it.

Music is always playing on the driving range

The course was in pretty good condition. I played ok holding my own with Alex, Norm & Foley. We had lots of laughs which were helped by the rum shots the ranger comes around serving while you play. It was our last day of warmer weather in the 70s. Each day the rest of the week it got colder and colder.

Alex played well and won the Irish Open with 81-81-80. He is very consistent which helps in this type of tournament. He won by 4 strokes! Wahoo! They only played 3 rounds – Thursday at Atlantic National, Friday at Hammock Creek and Saturday at Florida Club. Normally the tournament ends on Sunday at Abacoa but the weather forecast was 28 degrees with a real feel of 13 so the last round was cancelled .

The usual antics were in full display with drinks out at the pool even though it was cool. We missed some of the regulars as the field was a bit smaller than normal. I enjoyed a few days in Palm Beach Gardens doing some normal every day activities like laundry at my favorite laundromat, shopping at Macy’s and PGA Superstore, and preparing the year end reports for the UMC in Wayne,

A highlight of our visits to PBG are dinners with some of our long time friends. It’s always great to see Liz & Bruce and Jose. We forgot to take a photo with Jose because we were having a great time catching up.

Crazy enough we got about 6 inches of snow at home in Myrtle Beach on Saturday night. We decided to extend our stay a bit longer in Florida to let the snow melt a bit. Myrtle doesn’t have much snow equipment so a storm like this paralyzes the city. We don’t even own a snow shovel but this is now 2 years in a row we got snow. We’ve never seen it in person but it’s just nuts. Global warming anyone?

Our extended trip gives me a chance to see Stephen and the kids. We will head to Jacksonville for a few days and monitor our Ring camera to see when it’s clear at home. Thanks for joining our January adventure. Next up we have a cruise in March with lots of friends we met while cruising. It’s kind of a reunion from when we all met it 2007. We’ve seen many over the years but will be great to see some people we haven’t seen in quite some time. Until then…
