We (well really I) lazied around this morning as I was pretty tired from all the walking and bridge climb yesterday. We got organized and packed a bit after our peanut butter and jelly toast. Around 10 we set off to catch the hop on hop off bus to check out some more of Sydney. We walked to Downtown in the very windy weather. It was also cool today about 60. I know it’s colder home so I guess trying to prepare us for return to fall in the Northern Hemisphere. We took the blue line to check out Bondi beach and the.outskirts of the city. Because it was cool and windy we decided to just ride the bus without getting off. We switched to the city line at central station to head to the seafood market for lunch.
We enjoyed lunch at the Sydney Seafood market. You could buy fresh or cooked seafood. It wasn’t very large maybe 10 fish vendors, a few wine shops, a bread store and fruit market. Fish was very fresh – we had some oysters and a few other things.
After lunch we walked over to the casino to see the Melbourne Cup, a horse race like our Kentucky Derby. It’s a holiday in Victoria (Melbourne state) for the Melbourne cup with the kids off school and offices closed but it seemed like lots of people in Sydney also took off. The ladies were dressed to the nines in glitzy dresses, high heels and fascinator hats (didn’t see a single hat like we were at the derby). Was fun to people watch. The race had more than 20 horses and they were about 8 across coming into the finish line. Very exciting. We didn’t bet but enjoyed all the excitement.
Of course we needed to celebrate after Melbourne cup so found a fantastic happy hour. 2 for 1 cocktails. 2 beers and 2 grey goose cocktails was $21 Aud (about $14 usd). We had a few rounds at that price!
Walked around Darling Harbor for a bit they walked toward Circular Quay because I had some souvenir shopping to do. We stopped in a souvenir shop for some retail therapy before grabbing dinner. We had a simple dinner at Burger Project and caught quite a happy hour deal. 2 burgers, 2 beers and 1 chip for $25 ($17 usd). Wahoo. Bargains today.
It was earlier so we decided a night cap was in order in Circular Quay to say goodbye to Sydney. We sat and watched people climb the bridge (my hands still trembling watching them – lol – not really).
Ok so we had another nightcap when we returned to the apartment. We’ve had such an awesome trip and loved blogging to bring you along. I hope you enjoyed our journey together. We really enjoyed providing the updates and hearing your comments. We will travel tomorrow so likely no post. Our flight is at 11:50 am Wed. Australia time (7:50 pm Tues in NJ). We arrive in Houston at 10:30 am Wed and if all goes as planned will be back in NJ dinner time around 5 pm. Tomorrow we will have a 40 hour day to get back the day we lost along the way. We plan to post pictures and video we did on bridge climb once we get home and can read the usb of photos we bought.
