Fleeing February NJ Cold – Part 1b

Written by Kim

We got a bit of a delayed start leaving Rocky Mount after a short detour to Fast Med Urgent care after breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Alex has bronchitis so we got him checked out to get some meds and are thankful it’s nothing more serious. We waited most of the morning for him to be seen so I suggest they change the name because there is nothing fast about Fast Med. We picked up some prescriptions and were on the road about noon.

All packed up and ready to roll

We stopped for some lunch in Selma at Cookout. We didn’t realize it was drive thru only but great burgers cooked outdoor style (their marketing). I could tell Alex wasn’t feeling great when he let me drive a bit so he could rest. He usually does all the driving because he is not a good passenger. Of course, he remarked about 5 minutes into our drive how many times the speed sensor went off. We have the car set to alert you when you hit 85 mph and it beeped more when I was driving then the whole time Alex drove. My foot is a little heavier I guess 😳. It took us about 5 hours to get to Savannah.

We waved to Pedro at South of the Border (yes I’m an awful photographer)

We had dinner reservations at Vic’s on the River in Savannah. Dinner was awesome – thanks Dee for the recommendation. See our pictures below we tried some local favorites and had a fantastic dinner in a historic home turned into a restaurant right on the river. Yum!

Fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and balsamic drizzle
Alex’s whole red snapper (he asked for head to be cut off) with fig and apricot glaze
My seafood melange (shrimp, lobster, crab and scallops) over tagliatelle

In the morning we took a ride into Savannah to see the city in daylight. We will definitely need to come back and see more. The City Market is like a smaller more tame version of a Bourbon street atmosphere with live music and people strolling with drinks. We even saw one of those pedal bars but didn’t get a picture.

City market on a quiet Sunday morning
River boat on Savannah river
Lots of restaurants on the riverside
Very historic with cobblestone streets
First African Baptist church.

We drove about 7 hours to get to Hollywood beach. We passed Daytona and saw the blimp over the Daytona 500 and lots of people camping. We missed the rain but hit it a little further south for a while. We arrived at our apartment around 6. Took a stroll down the boardwalk and had some pizza and beers to end our night a bit early. We did lots of traveling today so wanted to get unpacked and relax.

We just missed the rain that delayed the Daytona 500. Beautiful here.

We are all set for a week in Hollywood. Our apartment is 1/2 block from the beach. Pictures will follow in my next post in about a week. Until then.

  1. Have fun kids! Andy was just in Savannah a few weeks ago when he drove his parents car down to Sarasota for them. He said we have to go.

  2. Thinking of driving up to Savannah when we get off the OY TA in 11/21… nothing like planning ahead! Thanks for the restaurant recommendation. Anything with goats cheese in – I’m there!
