Leg 3 – Raritan Canal Towpath

Written by Kim

After a few days of rainy weather inside, today we continued our journey on the Raritan Canal trail with a 3.7 mile walk from Manville to South Bound Brook. It was a little cooler today – although it was 57 was breezy so when the sun was behind clouds it was a bit nippy. Despite the breeze it’s always good for the soul to breathe fresh air and get off the treadmill 🤪

Oh boy. My whites are coming in strong!

In the beginning of this leg we passed through Zarephath which is the communal home of the Pillar of Fire church. It’s a group of building with a community of about 40 residents, a church, school, and publishing facilities. I read that this community has been inactive since the 70s due to flooding so I don’t believe anyone lives here now but the church and school are still operating.

The path is quite similar to the other 2 legs at some points the canal was not right next to the river (as it normally is) but then we crossed the river where the trail was side-by-side with the river.

Some farms near the canal
Finally an intersection with the river

We’ve done about 10 miles of the 38. More to come later in the week hopefully if the weather holds out.

Kind of what Alex and I look like waddling along the trail
