May 10-11, 2022 – Time to head home – Goodbye Madrid

Written by Kim

We got a great deal on TAP Portugal for business class seats home. We were a little skeptical because the ticket was 1/3 the price of other airlines and reviews were a little mixed but we figured for the price it was worth a try. I am spoiled traveling in business class to Europe for business and now am not willing to fly coach. Yes a little bit of a princess that’s me! TAP Portugal website and customer service communication is challenging but the flight was fine. We originally were planned to fly on Wednesday but they changed our flight to Tuesday without any notice or explanation about a week before we left. It put us in a bit of a tizzy but we decided to adjust our plans – less time in Barcelona, same time in Madrid and a pit stop at home before heading to Jacksonville for Stephen & Bethany’s wedding. It’s a miracle that with all the changes we made when this flight was changed that we didn’t screw anything up. Well we had a little hiccup when we arrived in Madrid and they didn’t have our hotel reservation but they were able to accommodate us with the same type of room we originally reserved.

A stop for the princess to sit on her throne in Lisbon airport. 🤪😂

Our flights were uneventful. We flew from Madrid to Lisbon with a few hour layover but we were able to go to the lounge so just relaxed, made some calls to check in with family, and continued on. The flight seemed to go quick. I watched all 10 episodes of “And Just Like That” the Sex in the City sequel. P.S. it’s hard to wipe tears with a mask, headphones and glasses on. 🥲There were several checks of our negative Covid tests, vaccine records and a special CDC form that accompanied our passport checks.

Lunch in flight to Lisbon

We arrived at JFK almost 40 minutes early and took a cab to our hotel near La Guardia to catch some Zzzz. We had a direct flight to Myrtle from La Guardia at 7 am so thought it best to get close to La Guardia the night we arrived. We boarded the hotel shuttle at 4:20 because Spirit informed us that security was very delayed and we didn’t want any issues. Since we were early we grabbed a bite for breakfast. Yes we were in a NY airport having our $50 egg sandwiches and coffee. At least they were good.

Well….how many of you can say you’ve slept in 5 different states or countries in 5 consecutive nights? We can – Madrid, NY, Myrtle, Georgia, Jax for us. We’re heading out in a bit to make our way to Stephen & Bethany’s wedding in FL. Time to move on we’ve been home for 28 hours! Tonight we’ll stop in Brunswick, GA a little north of JAX airport. Heather, Antoine and Lux fly in early tomorrow morning so it will be easy to pick them up with this plan.

Thanks for traveling along with us. Alex is going to post a recap of our tips and tricks from the trip. He also will post about our day in Toledo so we have a bit more to share. Until then…..
