Sept 14 – The President screws up our day and costs us our winnings

Written by Kim

We got an early start to be sure we didn’t miss our flights but as we approached the rental car return and saw roads closed off we knew we were in for some trouble. President Trump was in Vegas yesterday for a rally and fund raising dinner and evidently was leaving this morning causing them to shutdown the airport for his departure. I’m sure it would have been the same for any President but why can’t they be more considerate and move him off hours so the entire airport isn’t disrupted. We sat on the rental car bus for about an hour still with hope we could make our flight because we were about 2 hours early. Got to the airport (40 minutes prior to our flight) only to be told we couldn’t check in. Spirit wanted to charge us a $99 flight change fee because “we were late for our flight” and could book us on the flight on Thursday (3 days from now!). No thank you. After a mini meltdown I told Alex let’s walk away and figure out our options since we had 3 days if we wanted to pay the $99 fee. After a bit of research we found the American flight to Charleston tomorrow was our best option. Flights are very limited into Myrtle right now because of Covid reduced volume. Charleston is only a 2 hour drive and had the most affordable options. Unfortunately there were only 2 coach middle seats left so we splurged for first class which was only a small up charge. Bye bye Vegas winnings we’re paying it to American for a comfy ride home. Next was to get a rental car from Charleston and a hotel for tonight.

Thank god we are both pretty resourceful searching travel on our phones. We ended up with an awesome free room at Mandalay Bay. We were telling the girl at the desk our story and she gave us an executive suite overlooking the strip. A very nice room.

Alex relaxing I. Our living room overlooking the strip.
A desk not that we need that this time!
King size bed
Huge bathroom with toilet closet

We enjoyed a nice afternoon at the pool with a bucket of beers (of course). It was hot hot hot but the wave pool water was chilled we were guessing about 70 degrees but was freezing when you came out of the beating sun at 100 degrees. Felt great.

The wave pool with freezing cold water

We have to admit the vibe at the Plaza pool fit us better. Service was better, it was less crowded and music was excellent. All things that are important to us at a pool. Are we snobs? Or just mature consumer who know what we like. Before dinner we watched the Giants game in our living room. Heather recommended Border Grille so we booked a reservation there for dinner. My girl stays at Mandalay often so it’s nice to get recommendations from the kids. Dinner was excellent.

Alex’s Patron margarita and my peach mojito with some chips and salsa to start
Plantain empanadas for appetizer
My chicken quesadilla
Alex’s chicken poblano

After dinner we played a little more pai gow. We weren’t doing too well and I burned through my money but decided to take another $100 out and we recovered nicely once I hit a straight flush. Boom – we’re up again! We were very lucky this trip.

Some views from our room

Sobering view of the 2017 shooting. The shooter was 1 room over from us but 12 floors above. They no longer rent that room.
The strip all lit up!

We leave tomorrow (hopefully to head home). Ready to sleep in my own bed. Until then…,
