USA Road Trip – A Bittersweet Day in Mackinaw Island

Written by Kim

We left Elkhart, IN on Sunday morning to head north through Michigan to Mackinaw City. I got a chance to get my own picture of the Indiana sign because I missed the Michigan sign so we had to turn around to get it. My photo skills are abysmal.

Our drive was a little over 5 hours so we took a half day of rest to do laundry and take a nap. The hotel must have read my mind and gave us a room right across the hall from the guest laundry so we didn’t even need to go to the laundromat.

A pretty drive

We took the ferry over to Mackinaw Island in the morning. It was a very windy 20 minute ferry ride that took us under the Mackinaw Bridge (a few minutes detour for pictures)

Oh that hair!

We planned to rent bikes to explore the island, There were several places renting bikes but Alex did some research to find the cheapest and we got 3 speed bikes with foot brakes (which I don’t think I’ve used since I was a kid) for $13 an hour each, We biked the 8.2 mile road around the perimeter of the island.

We found a Voice Map self guided audio bike tour to narrate our ride. Many of you know we are big Voice Map fans and have used their self guided tours in many cities. The tour started at the Visitor Center across from the park.

The views were spectacular along Lake Huron. This is our 3rd Great Lake we’ve seen on this trip.

We stopped and took a small nature trail along the way.

Downtown was quite busy although it’s the end of their season. I can’t imagine what it’s like in summer. There are no cars our golf carts on the island only bikes and horses.

The fancy Grand Hotel carriage
The Grand Hotel from the ferry. We looked it up $1,100 to stay tonight!

After our trek around the island we got some lunch at The Great Turtke Brewery.

We enjoyed our day on the island but received sad news that our good friend, Mike, passed away when we returned to the hotel. We are heartbroken to lose our friend but so grateful that we cruised with Mike and Laurie in April. This loss for us is another example of why we try to live life to the fullest. Life is so fragile and short. Our prayers go out to Laurie and all who love Mike. He will be missed.

Mike far left
Rest in peace Mike

Tomorrow we head to Lake Superior to cruise the lake. Until then…..
