USA Road Trip – A night at the Tulsa State Fair

Written by Kim

Before leaving Wichita to drive to Tulsa we decided to take some bikes out for a ride along the Arkansas River. We rented bikes right outside the Hyatt.

The path was relatively flat but these bikes weren’t as easy to ride as the ones in Boise. It felt like the gears were not right

Our drive to Tulsa was relatively short 2 1/2 hours. We rested a bit and let it cool off a bit before heading over to the fair. It was in the 90s so hot hot hot! Tulsa state fair is the biggest fair in Oklahoma. It is held for 11 days and we just happened to be in town so decided to check it out. It was massive. The fair is held on 240 acres of fairgrounds.

There are over 650 vendors selling everything from mobile homes, cars, playgrounds, tornado shelters, kitchen knives, tshirts and other clothing, Pampered Chef, Sentsy, Tupperware and dollar store junk just to name a few things.

Need a playground
Or a tornado shelter?

There was lots of fair food – corn dogs everywhere including some wrapped in bacon, fried everything, bbq, wurst, turkey legs, etc.

Candy apples
Anyone for a BbQ parfait
Fried everything
Bacon everything
We shared a cheddarwurst with onions and kraut
Grilled chicken wrapped in bacon – kind of healthy for the fair
We split an apple dumpling with ice cream before we left

It wouldn’t be a state fair without the animals. In the one exhibit they had a petting zoo and lots of babies

They were 4 days old
3 day old sheep
Baby goats are the cutest

We were there on a Wednesday night so there was limited entertainment but it was packed. 38 Special was the headliner. They opened with Rockin’ Into the Night. There were only a few songs we knew. They sounded pretty good.

Group karaoke – anyone could join at a mic

Well….I’ve seen more mullets, boots & cowboy hats in one night than I ever thought I could. We enjoyed the fair. While it was packed there were plenty of tables to eat at and food was spread through the 240 acre fairgrounds so you never felt suffocated. It was well managed with trash regularly collected, etc, They really do things big in Oklahoma!

Tomorrow we plan to take Route 66 from Tulsa to Joplin, Missouri. Until then…..
