Our drive today was a little over four hours and took us to another new state for both of us – South Dakota.
The drive was mostly through prairies again with more hay bales but some windmills too. We’re starting to see a little more cattle as we get further south where the winters aren’t quite as bad.
We stopped about an hour north of Sioux Falls to play golf at Edgebrook Golf Course in Brookings, SD. The course was in good condition but it was like playing in a field just zigzagging back and forth. The elevation is a bit higher than Myrtle (1,660 ft) and it’s certainly less humid so the ball went a little longer and hit the firm ground and got lots of run. It was super windy so you needed to keep the ball low to take advantage of the run to get some extra distance. Neither of us played great but I did get a par on the second hole. Yeah! We played pretty fast – only 3 hours and 20 minutes for 18 holes.
Similar to Fargo, Sioux Falls is the most populous city in South Dakota. The Sioux Falls metro area accounts for more than 30% of the state’s population. Sioux Falls has about 200,000 people living here. It’s 86% white so hopefully the dogs and cats are safe (only kidding). Many European immigrants, primarily from Scandinavia, Germany and the British Isles, settled in South Dakota in the 19th century. The Big Sioux River is a tributary of the Missouri River in eastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa. It runs through downtown so we took a drive to check) it out, It wasn’t even as big as the Great Falls in Paterson, NJ near where I grew up. The park surrounding the falls was very well done.
We had a very nice dinner at Grille 26 before calling it a night.
Tomorrow we continue west to Deadwood, SD where we will stay 2 nights. Tomorrow will be a rest and laundry day then Sunday we will hit some sights like Mt Rushmore. Until then….
