USA Road Trip – Deadwood, SD

Written by Kim

Deadwood is a quirky little place. It was named by early settlers after the dead trees were found in its gulch. The city had its heyday from 1876 to 1879, after gold deposits had been discovered there, leading to the Black Hills Gold Rush. At its height, the city had a population of 25,000 now the population is about 1,150. The entire town has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District, for its well-preserved Gold Rush-era architecture

In its heyday Old West figures like Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok (who was killed there) could be found there.

We played a few slots and Alex did really well. He left up about $400!

There was a big music festival in town this weekend so hotel choices were limited. We stayed in an older Travelodge right up the hill from downtown, It was very clean but dated.

When’s the last time you saw Western wallpaper
Or long horned sheep in the parking lot
The casino next door is offering breakfast for 79 cents for their anniversary. We left before they opened so missed it

Tomorrow we head to Montana to see Yellowstone on Tuesday. Good night from Deadwood.
