We continued west as we left Pittsburgh. We drove about 5 hours – a bit longer than you might expect because Alex routed us north to drive along Lake Erie rather than taking the interstate. It was a nice drive going through some small downtowns with lots of different types of homes along the lake. There were mostly small older cottages, some mobile homes and a few larger, newer homes sprinkled along the lakefront. After traveling through 7 states we finally reached a new state for Alex – Ohio. I had already been to Ohio.
We were in no hurry today so stopped a few times to just relax and enjoy the beauty.
A few fun facts for you about Toledo. The city was founded in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River. It was originally part of Michigan but incorporated in Ohio after the conclusion of the Toledo War in 1837. After completion of the Miami and Erie Canal it grew quickly due to its position on the railway between New York and Chicago. To this day there’s lots of train traffic in Toledo. The first of many glass manufacturers arrived in the 1880s, eventually earning Toledo its nickname as “The Glass City”.
Our planned stop was to see the Triple A minor league baseball team, The Toledo Mud Hens. They were established in 1896 and the favorite team of Corporal Klinger, Jamie Farr. I didn’t remember that but maybe you did (if you’re old enough to remember M*A*S*H.
Before heading into the stadium we grabbed some vittles at Packo’s, a famous Hungarian restaurant.
The food wasn’t the most healthy but it was delicious.
After our dinner we may not need as much gas in the car tomorrow. 👃🤪. The weather at the ballpark was perfect. We enjoyed the game. We happened to see the Mud Hens on the night that they were playing as the Malmo Oat Milkers which is some crazy promotion that MLB announced with Oatly, a non-dairy based brand. Malmo, which is the location to which Oatly was founded on, is a Sweedish town that will be represented all season long in partnership with the MLB, as all 120 MiLB teams will wear special jerseys and hats, exclusive to the Oat Milkers branding. We both thought this was an odd promotion but a story nonetheless
We had fun at the game but decided to leave in the 8th inning to find our Hampton Inn for the night. Just as we got to our car it started to rain so we had perfect timing unexpectedly. It rained most of the night so brought in some cooler air. We needed to go into our warmer clothes suitcases in the car to swap out some things for a few pairs of long pants and jackets. We are expecting a few cooler days then it will warm up again,
Tomorrow we head to Indiana for a few days. We have a surprise event over the weekend we just booked, Stay tuned until then….
