Key West is a favorite destination of ours so was part of the reason we booked this cruise. We enjoy the vibe in Key West and have stayed there several times previously despite how expensive accommodations are. Rather than drink all day we thought it would be best to try the Voice Map self guided walking tour. You may recall we’ve done these tours in several other cities and find them very entertaining (and get some steps as well – we got 18,000 today).
Our tour started down by Mallory Square. Fun fact – the sunset celebration that takes place at Mallory Square each night was created by a famous Key West resident, Tennessee Williams. We weren’t there for sunset but have enjoyed the celebration on previous visits
Our tour took us to the Truman Annex a part of town we’ve never visited. Truman visited Key West for a total of 175 days on 11 visits during his presidency and visited five times after he left office. His first visit was in 1946. His home in this area was called The Littlr White House.
Anyone who has visited Key West knows there’s roosters and chickens everywhere. If you wonder why we learned that cock fighting was legal in Key West until 2007 then when it was banned the birds were set free to roam the streets. The town now has a program to feed them so they live well and are evywhere.
The lighthouse isn’t really right on the coast it’s a block or 2 inland partly because the wrecking trade was so popular and lucrative the locals really didn’t want it
We passed Ernest Hemingways house where he had several 6 toed cats
Duval street goes from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. We walked the 1.1 between the 2 bodies of water
We stopped for some drinks and snacks before going to the bouy ay the southern most point. We had some conch fritters and I thought of the time when my dad came home from the Bahamas with a live conch in his suitcase and fritter batter so he could make us fritters. My dad left me some great memories in his short time on earth.
After we finished our walking tour we headed back to Duval for some drinks at our favorites, Irish Kevin’s and Sloppy Joe’s.
Tonight was Scarlet Night on the ship. We had dinner in Pink Agave. It was ok but not great. We got all our food really quick even before we got our drinks which was weird. Food wasn’t really hot and it was mediocre not our favorite.
The entertainment is a bit different we saw a 15 minute show about the mystery of Scarlet Night. The singer was excellent
We also saw a 10 minute pop up circus that a cast member gave us a heads up about
We waited on line for what we thought was a show but was a dance party in the theater. We felt old and went to bed because we didn’t feel we fit in
Today we had a day at sea and tomorrow we visit Bimini – an exclusive area in the Bahamas for Virgin passenger. Until then…..
