January 2023 – First port Puerta Plata

Written by Kim

A rainbow appeared as we entered the resort – then it rained on and off

Puerta Plata, the silver port, was discovered on his first voyage, on January 12, 1493, and called the mountain (now Loma Isabel de Torres) Monte de Plata because on its top there are clouds that make it appear silver. We got married in Punta Cana on the other side of the Dominican Republic but had never visited Puerta Plata until today. It was not a very nice day out, raining on and off with peaks of sun but we ventured off to our excursion to the all inclusive

A cloudy arrival – long pier but nice walk
Trying to stay positive on a crappy day

Our stop changed after we booked our excursion since the ship is having some propulsion issues our ports were shortened, the times were adjusted and San Juan was outright cancelled. We docked at 8;00 but had to be back onboard by 2:30. Maybe booking a day pass for an all inclusive wasn’t the best idea but we were going for it. The resort, Emotions, was very nice. It had several pools, a beach, nice buffet lunch and of course cheap liquor.

Emotions

We parked ourselves by the pool and walked down to the beach to check it out but the vendors on the beach were annoying so we stayed by the pool. In the few minutes we were at the beach one vendor wanted to give me a bracelet. Then he wanted to give me an anklet but I told him my ankle is too fat. That was no deterrent. He took a necklace, made some knots in it to shorten it and had the anklet on my leg before I knew it. Ugh. I don’t have the patience. We didn’t have any cash but went back later to give him something but couldn’t find him. He moved on.

The port is relatively new and nicely done with paver paths that takes you through stores, lots of birds (thought of my friend Michelle’s birds), a public pool and some restaurants. Reminded us of Costa Maya. Next time if we come here we might just go to the pool at the port if we have a short stop. There’s not too much to see in DR.

Can you see the green birds?

Alex said the bathrooms at the port were beautiful – rivals BucEes???

Dinner tonight was at Izumi which is located up on Deck 11 behind the Viking Crown at the rear of the ship. We had to move dinner till 8:30 so Alex could watch the Giant playoff game. Yeah Giants for the win! We watched the game at the casino bar because Joel gives us both free drinks on Alex’s casino prime status. They changed what you get at Izumi for pre fix dinner – you get 1 small plate, 2 large plates or rolls (reduced to 4 pieces from 8) and 1 dessert. This was plenty of food and we didn’t get dessert.

Spicy tuna crispy rice
My wontons – forgot the pic they were good
Our rolls
My shrimp Udon

After dinner Alex played in the casino and won a bit. We are tracking and he is down $10 after Day 3. So far so good. I went to the show it was an impressionist, Robert Record. He was okay but I’m never impressed with impressionists.

Until then……next port St Croix
