April 2024 – Check off another country – our first visit to St. Lucia

Us with our tour guide, Smally

We had a long and exhausting day visiting the beautiful island of St. Lucia. We’ve been to the Caribbean many times but never had the opportunity to visit here.

A map of Saint Lucia

We took a land and sea island tour and traversed a lot of the 238 square mile nountainous volcanic island. On 22 February 1979, Saint Lucia became an independent state, however it remains a Commonwealth of the UK.

The Pitons, two mountainous volcanic plugs form the islands most famous landmark. Our ride in the van gave us fabulous views but was nerve wrecking as we followed the switchbacks and hairpin turns through the mountains.

After nearly 2 hours of driving we were at the cove where we would take a boat to Sugar Beach for snorkeling and some beach time. I had a bit of an anxiety attack from the crazy drive and then needed to take a huge step down to get into the boat so was a bit frazzled. The rum punch surely tasted good when we finally got to the beach

We had lunch of some local food before getting back in the van for some more adventure.

Our first stop after lunch was a waterfall or “Power Shower” as the locals call it. The water was pretty cool but refreshing.

We also visited the world’s only drive in volcano, the Sulphur Springs for a soak in the volcano sulfur pools and mud baths. The water stunk like sulfur and was a clear black color. It was a bit hotter than a hot tub but felt good. There were pots of mud you could apply if you wanted as you soaked. Laurie and I just took a short soak.

Our tour ended with another 90 minute ride over the mountainous switchbacks to get back to the ship. It was a long day of driving but we saw some fantastic once in a lifetime nature. It was beautiful.

Could this be Alex’s store – Crazy Al’s

We were tired and not very hungry so decided to have sushi. Mike didn’t join because he’s not a sushi fan

Tomorrow we are at another new island for us, Tobago. Until then…
